A blood pressure monitor is a medical device used to measure blood pressure, consisting of an inflatable bracelet to reduce blood flow, a mechanical mercury pressure gauge, a blower, and a control valve.

Manual sphygmomanometers are used in conjunction with a stethoscope.

A blood pressure monitor Style

  • The bracelet sits smoothly and comfortably around the arm, at roughly the same vertical height as the heart, while the person sits with their arm relaxed and supported.
  • It is necessary to choose the right size of the bracelet for the patient.
  • A very small size gives very high results in compression, while a very large size gives very low results.
  • The bracelet is inflated until the artery is completely closed, the arm artery is heard at the elbow joint by the stethoscope, then the pressure is slowly relieved.
  • As soon as the pressure in the bracelet drops, intermittent sounds are heard ==(Krotkov sounds)== when blood flow begins again in the artery.
  • The recorded pressure when this sound starts is systolic pressure,The pressure recorded when sounds disappear is diastolic pressure.

Types of sphygmomanometers :

  • Manual: Used by trained person, Requires handset
  • Mercury scales are considered the “golden rule” of measurement because their measurement is absolute and does not require recalibration
  • which is why they are often required in clinical trials of pharmaceuticals and for clinical evaluations to determine blood pressure for patients with a high risk ratio including pregnant women.
  • Mechanical non-liquid types are commonly used, but they should be calibrated against a mercury sphygmomanometer.
